Complete Yamaha XS400 possibly D model frame and engine prefix is 2A2.

This is a complete bike in unrestored condition. It could be put back on the road with a new battery pretty much as it is. It could also be stripped painted and polished to within an inch of its life or chopped / bobbed etc, the choice is yours.

I have owned the bike for many years and used to MoT it every year but never really used it.  It has covered only 5 miles since the last one but that expired 4 years ago.

Having said that I have continued to regularly run it until the Gel battery expired a couple of months ago.

It had an oil change with 20w50 around a year ago.  Whenever it was run the gears we’re engaged on the centre stand. The back brake was recently noticed to be dragging recently so the rear caliper was completely rebuilt with genuine new piston, seals and pads earlier this year.  Front brake seems ok. The chain, sprockets and tyres are all close to unused but a few years old.

Everything works, lights, horn etc, just the battery is missing, but I can probably get it started if you come to view.

Mudguards are solid, wheels and spokes are strong, seat in reasonable order and tyres stay inflated.

The best bit:  This bike is running an ultra rare aftermarket electronic (optical) ignition system made by Newtronic / piranha.  The electronic pack was replaced a few years ago and can still be purchased but the metal plate for the optical sensor that replaces the points is rarer than hens teeth due to the unusual 270 degree crank design often employed by Yamaha. It’s still this way on my Yamaha MT07!

Also the bike has an interesting registration plate.

This is not a restored bike, it shows its age in many areas including rust spots on the tank (clean inside), hand painted rear non-standard mudguard, touch-ups, headlight dipping switch knob not original part, fork gaiters fitted, non standard silencers etc but to me that was the bikes charm and it still looks good at a distance.

Clocks say 17037 miles and last MoT was at 17032. The fail was only because the tester never realised the lights come on at key switch position 2. Mileage is probably correct but I have no proof.

Purchaser wIll have to check but I believe it can now be self declared MoT exempt as registered 9/9/78 but not currently free tax because after 8/1/78.

If you are stood in front of me having viewed the bike I would consider any reasonable offers but below starting price would be ignored. Please don’t bother with unseen offers or “wots it going to take to buy it” questions, I have genuine reasons for wanting to sell but it will not be a problem to me if it does not.

I have some other xs250’s and one part built 400 custom of similar vintage along with numerous second hand parts collected over years so if you, like me, are mad enough to like these old plodders I may have other stuff you want.
